All Eastern AA events rely on an incredible team of volunteers and officials from across the region. Their expertise ensures competitions run safely, smoothly, and to a high standard.

As our programme continues to grow, we are keen to welcome more people into officiating — and you might be the perfect fit.

England Athletics officials fall into two broad categories:

  • Endurance Officials – Supporting off‑track events such as road races and cross country
  • Track & Field Officials – Supporting all disciplines that take place at an athletics track

Frequently Asked Questions

Find clear and concise answers to frequent inquiries about our programs, events, and membership benefits.

What support is available to me as an official?

All officials are offered training by England Athletics. At events, experienced officials will be paired with newer officials to provide support and mentoring at events and ensure that real life questions can be answered.

Do I get paid as an official?

Every event is different but typically officials are offered expenses to cover travel and food, rather than payment.

What if I can only volunteer for part of a day?

We recognise that everyone’s time is precious so we will always work with our officials to balance their availability for officiating along with the needs of an event. If in doubt – ask!

What events can I officiate at for Eastern AA?

Eastern AA need officials at the majority of their events:

  • Cross Country Championships
  • Indoor Track & Field Championships
  • 5000m & 10000m Championships
  • Outdoor Track & Field Championships
  • Combined Events Championships

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved!

How old do I need to be to officiate?

Officials must be 16 years old or older to become an official.
